Why Every Smart Ring Uses the Same Charger and What That Says About the Industry

Most smart rings ship with a nearly identical pogo-pin puck. That sameness comes from shared suppliers, tight size limits, and cost pressure, and it affects repair, waste, and what you should check before you reserve.

Why Every Smart Ring Uses the Same Charger and What That Says About the Industry

If you line up chargers from four different ring brands, you will see the same small puck with two or three gold contacts. That is not copying. It is what happens when small companies buy from the same short list of battery, sensor, and connector suppliers and design around the same finger.

A ring has almost no internal height to work with. USB-C needs depth and a rigid shell. Wireless Qi coils need diameter and add heat in a tiny sealed loop. Two pogo pins need little space, cost cents in volume, and work through a simple plastic dock. So most brands land in the same place.

Why pogo pins won

Pogo-pin docks solve three practical problems at once. They keep the ring sealed against sweat and water, they do not need alignment chips, and the dock can be made for a few dollars once the mold exists.

The tradeoff is that you now own a single-purpose accessory. Lose it while traveling and you cannot charge from a standard cable. If the pins corrode or the magnet weakens, the whole dock is trash even though the ring is fine. Brands accept that because the alternative adds thickness buyers notice right away.

We have made the same tradeoff for Pulsyn Rune 1 so far, with a small dock in the box. Rune 1 is pre-launch and planned to ship in Q3 2026 at $200 one-time with no subscription, with a $20 reservation through pulsyn.tech. We are not claiming our dock is more durable yet because we do not have field return data.

Why the same three factories matter

Few factories can place curved batteries, stacked flex boards, and optical sensors inside a ring housing at yield. When several brands use the same vendors, chargers converge even faster because the vendor already has a tested pin layout and charging profile.

That sharing cuts cost and speeds up fixes. It also means one supplier change can ripple across brands. If a vendor ends a pin part or changes plating, every brand using that part redesigns its dock or pays more to keep it. You see the result as out-of-stock docks and small price bumps that look random from the outside.

What buyers should check before reserving

Do not judge a ring by renders. Ask four questions that predict ownership cost.

First, can you buy a spare dock separately and what does it cost. Second, does the ring use a standard 5V USB input on the dock side so a phone brick works. Third, what happens if you lose the sizer set or need a size exchange. Fourth, is the price one-time or tied to a monthly plan to see your own data.

On that last point, the math is plain. A $300 ring plus $6 per month costs $444 after two years. A $200 one-time ring with no subscription costs $200. That gap is why we kept Rune 1 at $200 one-time with no subscription ever, even though it limits short-term revenue.

Shared parts are not proof of low quality. They are proof the category is still young and supply is narrow. Until more vendors enter or rings agree on a common dock, keep your puck in the same pouch as your ring and factor a spare into your budget.
