Understanding your Sleep Score

How Pulsyn calculates your Sleep Score, what the bands mean, and how to read the hypnogram.

Last updated: July 13, 2026

Your Sleep Score is a single 0–100 rating for the night. It summarises how well you slept based on the signals captured by Rune 1. Higher numbers indicate stronger recovery.

Score bands

The app uses four bands:

  • Strong night: 85 and above
  • Solid: 70 to 84
  • Fair: 55 to 69
  • Light rest: below 55

These labels describe the night as a whole, not any single measurement.

Contributors

Sleep Score has three primary contributors you see in the app:

  • Duration: how much sleep you actually got compared with your personal target.
  • Efficiency: the ratio of time asleep to time in bed.
  • Depth: the balance of deep and REM sleep relative to your total sleep time.

The score also weighs other on-device signals, such as timing regularity, sleep latency, and HRV during sleep. The app surfaces Duration, Efficiency, and Depth as the main lenses.

Sleep stages and the hypnogram

Rune 1 estimates the sleep stages your body passes through each night:

  • Light: N1 and N2 sleep, the lighter stages that make up most of the night.
  • Deep: N3 or slow-wave sleep, the physically restorative stage.
  • REM: the stage linked to dreaming and cognitive recovery.
  • Awake: brief wakeful periods, including the time it takes to fall asleep.

The app visualises these stages as a hypnogram: a per-minute timeline that shows when each stage occurred. Use it to spot patterns, such as REM clustered late in the night or deep sleep concentrated in the first half.

How the score is produced

On-device machine-learning models compute Sleep Score. They compare your night against your own baseline and broader population norms, then combine the contributors into the final 0–100 value.

Tips for interpretation

  • Compare tonight to your own recent average rather than chasing a perfect 100.
  • A single low night is normal. Look for multi-night trends before changing habits.
