Chatting with North

How the in-app chat works, including proactive starters and suggested prompts.

Last updated: July 13, 2026

The chat tab is where you talk directly to North. Ask a question, request a recommendation, or follow up on something from your coaching feed. North responds in plain language and can pull from your recent ring data to ground the answer.

This documentation describes the chat experience inside the Pulsyn mobile app. The docs website does not contain a live North chat.

How it works

Open the North tab and tap the chat input. Your message is processed on-device by default. If you are a Pro user and have enabled the Pro cloud tier, that message is sent to Pulsyn's encrypted EU cloud for processing instead.

North's voice playback, when you choose to hear a response aloud, happens entirely on your phone. Audio does not leave the device.

What to ask

North works best with specific, Pulsyn-grounded questions. A few good starters:

  • "How did I sleep last night?"
  • "What's my best focus window today?"
  • "When should I stop caffeine?"
  • "Why is my readiness lower than usual?"
  • "Plan a lighter day based on my recovery."
  • "Compare this week to last week."

You can also ask North to explain a metric, compare two time periods, or build a simple experiment. See What North can help with for a fuller list.

Proactive starters

On the Pro cloud tier, North can offer proactive starters above the input field. These are one-tap prompts based on your current data. For example, a question about an unusual HRV dip, a travel recovery plan, or a caffeine cutoff recommendation. Tap a starter to send it, then follow up naturally.

Reasoning traces

For the curious, North can show a lightweight reasoning trace on some answers. The typical shape is:

  1. TREND: identify a recent pattern.
  2. CROSS-REFERENCE: pull in related data.
  3. COMPARE: check against your own history.
  4. SURFACE: decide what to tell you and why.

You do not need to read this to use North. It is there if you want to understand how North reached a conclusion.

Chat tips

  • Reference a specific day: "How was my sleep on Tuesday?"
  • Mention an outcome: "My workout felt hard yesterday. What does the data say?"
  • Ask for an experiment: "Help me test whether a 9:30 PM wind-down improves my deep sleep."

North keeps your conversation in the app's local memory. You can review, forget, or re-remember parts of it from the memory browser.
